The era of digital revolution has connected us as we never were connected before and separated us equally powerful at the same time. People are linked through all sorts of digital and social channels nowadays but feeling heartbreaking loneliness and social isolation at the same time. What happened to us? What happened to humanity that brought us to that level of community separation; to the stage where the majority of what we do is compete for better education, a better job, better material status as they would be the only promise for a happy life?
The catch that reveals itself sooner or later in every person’s life is that the hunt for external factors of supposed happiness never stops. Because there can always be more, better, more beautiful, richer, younger, smarter … Taking that into account, the socially pre-conditioned path brought us to the edge of living as individuals. ”I can’t honestly co-create with another human if I want to achieve what society has been presenting to me as the final result of the true happiness – and that is me being better than my human fellow?” Or? Is that where misconception happens?
Living Community Used to BeOur Main Social Connection and Path to Happiness
Since the beginning of human civilization, we have been living together. As tribes, communities, families, connecting generations. Stories, knowledge and experiences were shared from generation to generation, they’ve connected us with each other, helped us develop loyalty and feeling of belonging to something that was bigger than “me as an individual”. Being an important co-creator by living community used to be a virtue that we were proud of, a virtue that brought happiness. My life and my contribution mattered to my tribe, my community, my family.
How can we go back to our roots? Back to our core human nature of being happy, trustfully living our individual purpose and mission within the community?
Could we simply start with spending a little time each day practicing to cultivate happiness and also to cultivate other virtuous qualities like compassion and altruism, imagining the world would really be a better place, and we’d all be transforming our brains in a very positive ways? And I don’t mean “oh I must change my life totally and cut of from my past and I’ll be a better person”. It’s not about that at all. The trick is to be authentically you. The formula for happiness is not the same for everyone but the good news is that the things we love to do are the building blocks of a happy life. Playing, having new experiences, friends and family, doing things that are meaningful, appreciating what we have. These are the things that make us happy. And with happiness, it’s simple; the happier you are, the happier everyone is. So, I guess going back to the roots of living community again could be a great way to regain what we have lost during the years of digital individualization. To show our successors a potential new/old way to being happy. With time, practice and patience, the modern discourse of “how much do you earn, what do you do for a living, what have you achieved in your career” will fade away eventually and become replaced by “who you are, what do you believe should be done for common good, how do you feel today”.
Leaving External Happiness Factors aside Can Truly Make Us Happier
So instead of chasing external factors for happiness let’s simply turn inwards. Let’s dive into our inner labyrinth and connect with our true self again. Let each of us ask ourselves: “What truly makes me happy?” We all like living comfortably, feeling safe and enjoying luxuries of life. Surly they can bring us certain satisfaction. But being able to know how to live a simple and basic life, being able to live the true self and not selling our moral and our values for external ‘happiness’ factors, can bring us a real freedom. As Janice Joplin once sang: “Freedom is just another word of nothing left to lose.”
Move away from conditioning and negativity of society that is challenging and pulling us into a certain, energy draining pattern. You have the power to say NO. Use it! Courageously choose to be YOU, step out and show yourself to the world.
I can promise you that the new/old empowered you will surely feel no need to compete and be better in order to feel happy. The new/old empowered and connected you will know what your strengths are, where and how you can fully contribute to the co-creation of our basic cell, the living community. You will come back home.
So what do you say? Shall we?
